Category: Site

I just switched to a new theme that I built. I wrote a long post earlier this week covering my thought process behind it and some features that I added, and then… I lost the post.

It wasn’t WordPress’ fault, I wrote it in markdown in Textastic on my iPad and thought I saved it to iCloud. It turns out I didn’t–I saved it locally. And of course that was when the iOS 10 GM was released and when I did a clean install, I lost the post.

Anyway, I’ll write up another post about the new theme in the near future. I’ll also be releasing the theme for download, so keep an eye out for the post. Now would be a good time to subscribe to my posts :)

As always, please let me know if you run into any problems.

Back in October, I made some changes so a different color scheme was shown depending on the time of day. I was using PHP to handle the changes at the time and ended up getting rid of it because it didn’t play nice with the caching I was using.

Anyway, earlier today I reimplemented the feature in javascript, and the theme you see is now based on your local time of day instead of the server time of day. If you visit the site between 7am and 8pm Pacific, you’ll see the default light theme. If you visit between 8pm and 7am, you’ll see a dark theme.

Please let me know if you notice any issues.

I just realized that the contact form wasn’t actually sending me emails upon submission, so if you’ve contacted me through the form, I likely never received it. Anyway, it’s fixed now, so please feel free to contact me again and I’ll actually get it this time. Sorry about that.

I made a couple of tweaks to the layout of the site. If you’re on a large-screen device (like a computer or iPad), you should see a little sidebar on the left that sticks to the top of the browser window when you scroll. If you’re on a phone, you’ll see a one-column layout like before. As always, please let me know if you run into any weirdness.

I’ve made a few tweaks to the fonts used on the site. The masthead font is now VT323 from Google Fonts and the body font is a system font. What you see depends on what OS you’re running and what fonts you have installed, but on OS X and iOS, you should see Avenir for the body font. Please let me know if you notice any font or display issues.

Over the span of this past weekend, I moved this site and Miranda’s site from Site5 and over to Linode. The biggest benefit to this is that it gives me complete control over the server and software running on it. Not only are both sites being served via HTTPS now, but the site definitely seems to be faster–both of which are big pluses in my book :)

I’ll write more on the actual migration later, but for now, please let me know if you come across anything broken.

I know it hasn’t seemed like it lately, but I’m still alive and am going to resume posting here more often. I spent the last few nights rebuilding the theme from scratch with the Foundation for Sites 6 framework… and did it all with my iPad :)

All of the features and stuff that worked before should work now, so please let me know if you run into any problems or notice something wonky.

I realized this morning that I never wrote the code to have linked post titles in the RSS feed link to the original, linked article so I added it. Please let me know if you run into any issues.

If you visit the site on Halloween (tomorrow, October 31st), you’ll see a special theme on the site all day. I’ll likely do other themes for other holidays as well, but figured I’d use this as a test run. Let me know if you run into any issues.

The RSS feed for the site now displays the featured image for posts that have them. A small tweak, but it makes the feed so much better. You may need to unsubscribe/resubscribe for the images to show up since the feed may be cached by your RSS reader/service.
